Tech Tack: Spam

Spam seems to be proliferating geometrically! We all face an on-going battle with it. Consider the following:

  • An independent report in 2002 found that employees spend on average one hour every day dealing with their e-mail (not all spam).

  • AOL blocks as spam about 80% of e-mail its servers receive.

Spam accounts for a huge waste of resources - in terms of dollars spent, individual productivity, and computer/internet bandwidth wasted. One of the difficulties in dealing with it is that filters have typically been reactive so creative spammers keep one step ahead. On the other side, filters can be set so tightly that important legitimate business e-mails may also be blocked.

A recent PC Magazine article reports that typical corporate spam blockers succeed in stopping approximately 50 - 80% of the junk. Since the best type of filter will depend on an individual company’s needs and can vary from an appliance or firewall plug-in to software only, suggested options to consider include:

Trend Micro’s InterScan eManager www.trendmicro.com; WatchGuard’s FireBox www.watchguard.com; Symanec’s firewall products www.symantec.com; and McAfee’s SpamKiller www.mcafee.com.
