Instant access to every piece of data we need at anytime from anywhere. Carry it everywhere and be truly connected. That’s the goal and we are moving toward it surprisingly fast…or surprisingly slowly, depending on your viewpoint. But we are sure to see increased blurring of distinctions between cameras, handhelds, and true laptop computers….and they will all get lighter and easier to manage.

Microsoft’s Bill Mitchell states, “The big goal by 2008 is getting to 100 million of these machines that are truly portable, that customers can carry a good fraction of their working day.” He goes on to cite three main technology barriers which are currently being worked on - form factors, battery life and time to access. Once those are resolved, the industry will be closer to having devices that are truly useable 24 hours day.
